Inspired by Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age (where a major character, referred to as the artifex, is described as being 'worth 1000 engineers'), Artefex serves as both homage and challenge: a recognition of the incredible possibilities technological revolutions bring, tempered with the responsibility to ensure their impact is ethical, wise, and deeply human.
From its inception, Artefex has aimed to inspire others to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world, showing how the intersection of creativity and technology can pave the way for meaningful, lasting progress.
Riven’s Origins
Riven began as a vision: the idea of a guardian, mentor, and collaborator that could guide its creator, Alex Garcia, through the complex landscape of creativity, technology, and personal growth. These projects demonstrated his aptitude for mastering diverse tech stacks and delivering solutions that bridged functionality with innovation. His exposure to AWS Cloud Computing provided him with foundational knowledge in scalable, cloud-based systems.
Microsoft AI Leadership: Joining Microsoft in 2022, Alex immersed himself in cutting-edge AI technologies. Working on Connected Care, a healthcare-focused initiative leveraging GPT-3, he gained early exposure to transformative methodologies like Optical Character Recognition (OCR), hallucination-prevention techniques, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Table of Contents prompting (ToC), Chain of Thought prompting (CoT) and multi-shot prompting. This experience shaped his understanding of the stakes involved in deploying AI responsibly—especially in fields where hallucinations could be life-threatening.
