The Problem Isn't AI-Written Code. It's Unowned Code.
Every engineer has hated code they wrote themselves.
The Stranger in Your Own Code
There is a common argument against AI-generated code:
“If AI wrote it, who understands it?”
It is a fair question.
But every experienced engineer has had this moment:
You open a file.
You stare at a function.
You think, “Who wrote this garbage?”
Then you check the commit history.
It was you.
Six months ago.
This is one of the great humbling rituals of software engineering. Eventually, every engineer meets their past self in the codebase and realizes that authorship is not the same as understanding.
You wrote it.
You reviewed it.
You shipped it.
And now, months later, it might as well have been written by a stranger.
The context is gone. The assumptions are gone. The urgency is gone. The shortcut that felt obvious at the time now looks like evidence of a minor psychological collapse.
Understanding Decays
This is not a failure. It is normal.
Understanding decays.
Systems change. Requirements change. You change. The code remains, carrying decisions that were once alive and are now fossilized into syntax.
So when people say, “If AI wrote the code, who understands it?” I want to answer carefully.
Because the question matters.
But it is not new.
What Unowned Code Means
The real problem is not AI-written code.
The real problem is unowned code.
Unowned code is code nobody has read carefully.
Unowned code is code nobody tested against reality.
Unowned code is code nobody can explain.
Unowned code is code that enters the system without a human taking responsibility for its behavior.
That can happen with AI.
It can also happen with Stack Overflow, copy-pasted internal snippets, rushed senior engineers, outsourced teams, framework magic, and your own sleep-deprived hands at 1:00 AM.
AI did not invent bad code.
Engineers did.
What AI changes is speed.
It makes it easier to produce more code than you can responsibly understand.
That is the danger.
Ownership Is the Standard
But the answer is not to worship hand-typed code as morally superior.
Hand-typed garbage is still garbage.
The answer is ownership.
If AI helps produce code, the engineer’s job becomes even more explicit:
Read it. Test it. Break it. Ask what assumptions it made. Compare it to the existing architecture. Check failure modes. Cut what does not belong. Simplify what is too clever. Document what future-you will forget.
Then own it.
Not because you typed every character.
Because you accepted responsibility for the system.
That is the standard.
A bad AI-assisted engineer says:
“The model wrote it.”
A good AI-assisted engineer says:
“I used the model, reviewed the output, verified the behavior, and I am responsible for what shipped.”
That is the difference.
And it is not just technical. It is ethical.
Because software does things in the world. It moves money. It sends messages. It stores private data. It schedules interviews. It recommends care. It shapes what people see and what they believe they can do.
You do not get to abdicate responsibility because a tool helped.
The tool does not own the consequence.
You do.
The Responsibility Test
This is where a lot of anti-AI arguments aim at the wrong target.
They ask:
“Did you write it?”
But the better question is:
“Can you stand behind it?”
Can you explain the design? Can you identify the risks? Can you repair it when it fails? Can you say what you would do differently next time?
If yes, then the code is owned.
If no, then the code is dangerous, regardless of whether it came from AI, a teammate, a library, or your past self.
The future of engineering is not a purity test about authorship.
It is a responsibility test about ownership.
The question is not:
Did you type it?
The question is:
Can you own it?
