Practical Wisdom in the Age of AI
The missing AI skill is not prompting. It is judgment.
Judgment, Not Prompting
The word I keep coming back to is judgment.
Not intelligence.
Not speed.
Not prompt engineering.
Judgment.
The ability to act well in context.
The ability to know when the answer is technically correct but productively wrong. When the model is confident but unsupported. When the system works but the user experience does not land. When the test passes but the architecture is bending in the wrong direction.
Practical Wisdom
The Greeks had a word close to this: phronesis.
Practical wisdom.
Not abstract knowledge. Not pure theory. Not the ability to recite principles from a distance. Practical wisdom is knowing how to deliberate under real conditions. It is the intelligence of action.
That is what AI demands from us.
Fluency Is Not Truth
Because AI can produce. Quickly. Fluently. Relentlessly.
It can generate code. It can write copy. It can summarize. It can plan. It can explain. It can produce something that looks finished long before it has been tested by reality.
That is the trap.
Fluency is not truth.
Output is not judgment.
A model can give you a plausible answer. It cannot decide what matters for your life, your product, your customer, your ethics, or your system.
That burden remains human.
The Operator at the Center
This is why I do not think the AI literacy problem is mostly about prompts.
Prompts matter, but they are not the center.
The center is the operator.
Who is asking? Why are they asking? What are they optimizing for? What do they know? What do they not know? What will they do when the answer sounds good but might be wrong?
Without practical wisdom, AI becomes a confidence amplifier.
If you are clear, it helps you move.
If you are confused, it helps you move faster in the wrong direction.
This is true in code. It is true in business. It is true in creativity. It is true in personal life.
Ask AI to help you “build an app,” and it may start generating files.
Ask AI to help you clarify the smallest useful slice, define non-goals, test assumptions, and identify failure modes, and now you are using it differently.
Same tool.
Different operator.
That is practical wisdom.
Power Requires Proportion
It is not anti-technology. It is not romantic resistance. It is not pretending humans are magical and machines are empty.
It is simpler than that.
Power requires proportion.
The stronger the tool, the more important the hand holding it becomes.
This is where a lot of AI discourse gets stuck. Some people want to worship the machine. Some want to dismiss it. Some want to use it as a shortcut. Some want to ban it because shortcuts scare them.
But the mature question is not whether AI is good or bad in the abstract.
The mature question is:
What kind of person does this tool make me when I use it this way?
Does it sharpen my thinking or outsource it? Does it help me see the system or hide the system? Does it increase my agency or replace it with passive consumption? Does it help me act well in context?
That is the practical question.
Philosophy Becomes Engineering
And practical questions are where philosophy becomes engineering.
Plato gives us ideals. The perfect form. The abstract truth. The clean shape of what something should be.
Aristotle pulls us back into the world. The situation. The tradeoff. The contingent reality where action happens.
AI lives in that second place.
Not because ideals do not matter.
They do.
But because every useful AI interaction eventually becomes practical.
What should I do next? What should I trust? What should I test? What should I ignore? What should I build? What should I refuse?
The model can help.
It cannot become your conscience.
It cannot become your taste.
It cannot become your responsibility.
That is still yours.
So the next age of AI will not belong to the people with the cleverest prompts.
It will belong to the people with the clearest judgment.
The people who can use powerful systems without becoming passive inside them.
The people who can move fast without losing the thread.
The people who understand that the answer is not the artifact.
The answer is what you do with it.
