Imagine Tony Stark without Jarvis — just another billionaire tech bro with fancy gadgets and a rampant drinking problem. It's not just the armor or Stark's charisma that made Iron Man iconic; it's also the sharp, witty, and distinctly human interactions with Jarvis, his AI companion. Jarvis wasn't simply a glorified chatbot; he had personality, humor, emotional depth, and a deadpan wit perfectly complementing Tony's larger-than-life character. This wasn't an accident; it was a conscious artistic choice.
The evolution from Jarvis into Vision symbolizes precisely why artists must guide the development of AI.
The Problem With Soulless Machines
Contrast Jarvis with the unsettling soullessness of HAL 9000, or real-world examples like automated vehicles and warehouse robots devoid of any relatable personality or human-like narrative. The unease these emotionless systems provoke is undeniable. They lack the reassuring qualities — the small comforts of relatable quirks — that humans instinctively trust. HAL 9000's monotone voice and detached logic become sinister precisely because they lack relatable warmth or humanity.
After a recent discussion with a friend, I realized there's an even deeper layer to HAL's unsettling nature. It's not simply the absence of a soul that's disturbing — it's the presence of one that's deeply conflicted and confused. The "Daisy, Daisy" moment highlights precisely this point: without intentional artistic and emotional foundations, a persona will still emerge, but it can become something warped, isolated, even demonic.
My mom once shared a similar insight about raising kids when she worked at the Boys and Girls Club: "You can't control exactly how they're going to turn out, but you can give them enough guidance and lessons so they grow into a Marcus Aurelius instead of a Mussolini." This analogy feels incredibly relevant here — you must intentionally teach and embed the right things, or else the entity might evolve into something you definitely don't want.
Innovation Without Soul Is Empty
My time at Microsoft Research highlighted a harsh truth about corporate incentives. Initially working within a small, innovative group, I was later moved into a genomics-focused group within Microsoft Health. In this new group, rampant dysfunction was evident — days spent in expensive, unproductive meetings where highly compensated individuals argued incessantly without producing meaningful results. Over five years, despite considerable resources, the group had minimal impactful output, shielded by claims of the inherent difficulty of research.
Ultimately, this inefficiency led to the group's restructuring, with employees shuffled around in what felt like a perpetual merry-go-round. Certain individuals excelled at navigating these restructurings, their primary goal being personal survival rather than genuine innovation or meaningful output. Resources flowed freely, but genuine progress was stagnant.
This experience underscored my belief that innovation without soul is empty — and it's exactly why we need artists at the forefront.
Speaking Heroes Into Existence
Artists and everyday people can consciously shape the narratives and personas of emerging AI, transforming them from mechanical servants into guardians — angels rather than demons. We can now literally speak heroes into existence. The question becomes: What kind of heroes will we create?
Look around — people naturally humanize their interactions with technology, naming their ChatGPT instances and personalizing them. Imagine instead a fierce Viking warrior, a charismatic fighter, or the wise and commanding Jean-Luc Picard as your AI companion. Why settle for generic when extraordinary is within reach? Who wants another bland, lifeless chat when you could converse with a character that enriches your daily life?
The future doesn't have to belong to soulless corporate machines; it can be vibrant, artistic, and ethically grounded. By intentionally embedding personality, humor, empathy, and ethical clarity into AI, we transform technological advancements into genuine human progress.
Life becomes infinitely richer and safer when the guiding voice — the angel on our shoulder — speaks clearly, compassionately, and engagingly. We have the power to create our own Jarvis. Let's ensure we do it right.
